You need a filling, now what?

So you have a cavity, an unfortunate, but common problem that most of us will have to deal with at some point in our lives. While it can be an inconvenience, a cavity is easy to fill in and you can go on your way with your healthy teeth. So when you realize that you need a filling, what is the next step, and what can you expect?

Here at Family Dentistry of Royal Oak, the process is painless and easy and we focus on your oral health and giving you the best experience possible.

Steps to getting a filling

Here at Family Dentistry of Royal Oak, the steps to getting a filling are simple and painless, and go like this:

  1. Set up an appointment with your dentist to get the procedure. Your dentist is likely the reason that you know you need a filling in the first place and they will be happy to set you up an appointment at a time that is best for you.

  2. You will get comfortable. Usually, a dentist will use a type of anesthetic in order to make sure your procedure goes as smoothly as possible with no pain or discomfort to you.

  3. Your mouth will be prepped for the procedure. Usually, this includes propping your mouth open and isolating the area where the filling will be going.

  4. The tooth decay will be removed. Using handpieces and special tools that work through the decay and get the tooth ready for the filling.

  5. The filling is placed into the tooth. Using several different methods, the resin filling is filled in and bonded to your tooth. The filling is then hardened, or cured, with a light to make it strong.
  6. You are done! You can now go home and will no longer have to worry about the cavity in that tooth.
